Founder-Spiritual Director: Thakor Patel

 
 
 

Born April 2, 1942 in India. Arrived in United States May 1971. On a visit to India in 1973, he received initiation into yoga from his guru Kripalu (Swami Shri Kripalvanandji Maharaj), and has been teaching yoga and meditation since 1975.


He was trained and educated as an architect. After 18 years of study and work in architecture, he discontinued his profession to follow a yoga path and devote his energy exclusively to spiritual work.


In June 1976, he established Kripalu Yoga Clinic/Ashram in Indianapolis, Indiana. He founded Kripalu Yoga Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit federal tax-exempt organization, in November 1980 in Indianapolis, Indiana.


He established Kripalu Yoga Clinic/Ashram in India on his visit in November-December 1987. He founded Kripalu Yoga Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit organization in India on his visit in August-December 1988.


As part of house-holders work-life, he occupied part-time doing administrative and financial management work as self-employed; through Kripalu Yoga Foundation, Inc. He sponsored and administered Federal food/nutrition and Title XX child care program(s) between 1981-2003.


He occupied part-time in doing administrative and financial management consulting work through 2003-2011, using his twenty three years of previous self-employed work experience. Thus, he completed his active social services work.


Currently, he continues to teach yoga to children grades 0-8 at a Montessori Option School, part-time sense 2000, in addition to his regular teaching yoga and meditation classes including other spiritual programs and services planned; besides maintaing his own yoga sadhana/practice.


He is married to Nirmala, and they have three sons, one granddaughter and one grandson.
